July 5: Sylvan Lake (Custer State Park)

Our little hikers getting ready to explore.

Max doing some extreme rock climbing.

Family hike time.

Nana picture time.

Hey...look out for that rock right above your head...

They didn't want a picture so I said I was just taking a picture of the lake and Tom was having them look for a bird in the trees.

Me and my Sophie explorer.

Maxton found a rock.

Peek-a-boo!

We see you!

Buddy and me...Sophie was already off finding more rocks and continuing on to her destination.

July 5: Wildlife Loop Road (Custer State Park)

Our first bison sighting!

Max enjoying the drive.

Eagle Eye Sophie on the lookout.

More bison.  Pretty cool to see young, old, male, female.

They are pretty darn big creatures...

Our fearless driver.

Prairie dogs.  Yip yip!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

I might not be at Coney Island but I thought the title was fitting since I had a little bit of luck at the casino tonight.  Always better to walk away with a little cash rather than just donating to the local economy.  Arrived ahead of the rain in Deadwood and Sophie was able to get a little swim time in with Nana at the pool.  Have I mentioned how nice it is to have Mom and Mike with us to have a couple of extra hands to help with everything?  Because it is nice!

Maxton didn't get a chance to spend some time in the pool (and that made him really sad) but he was sleeping when we got into the site and didn't want to wake up.  After rousing the sleeping bear, we managed to get everyone down to the trolley stop and into downtown Deadwood.  It almost worked out that we could see the Wild Bill reenactment at Saloon #10 but the kids were "starving" (as Sophie likes to say) so we cut out early and headed across the street for dinner while listening to a little music outside.

After dinner, Tom and I brought the kids back and Mom and Mike stayed downtown for a little bit to try their luck at the casinos.  No luck there.  Kids were just going to sleep when they got back and then I headed out to a couple of the casinos around the campground.  Managed to win $50 I figured it was a good time to get out and quit while I was ahead.  I'm sitting in the laundry room washing clothes now; I figured that it would be a good time to get posts online but the internet is not working.  I was at least making progress getting pictures off of my camera but now my computer just gave me an error message with that.  Temporarily freaked me out because when I reinserted the camera card, it said no pictures but a quick check of the Picture folder shows me that they are there.  Whew!  Disaster averted!

It's been a great trip so far...the tired is catching up.  I think that helped me realize today just how long 18 days really is!  Looking forward to tomorrow though; should be another fun filled day!

Buffalo and Black Hills

What a great start to the day!  We broke camp around 8:30 in the morning and headed to the Visitor Center.  Decided to pass on the gold panning demonstration and set out on the Wildlife Loop Road.  It did not disappoint!  Not too far into the road we encountered our first bison followed by a few more scattered throughout (including a couple of cows with their calves).  I jumped out to take a picture of the first one that we saw; being that close is pretty awesome in the truest sense of the word:  just watching and listening to it walk through the grass and seeing it up close gives you a sense of how powerful (and looks like surprisingly nimble) these giant creatures are.  The loop treated us with some views of turkey, prairie dogs, mule deer, and pronghorn sheep.  We've taken to calling Sophie "Eagle Eye" due to her affinity for spotting pronghorns.  Pretty cool to watch her get excited to look for and find animals.

After a quick gas and go stop in Custer, we tried to head up to Little Devil's Tower but the trailhead was on the other side of the first tunnel (poor information from park ranger) so we walked around the Sylvan Lake area.  Visitor advice for anyone traveling to Custer with kids:  go to Sylvan Lake.  In fact, make a day out of it and bring your suits.  We just did the little hike around Sylvan Lake and it was perfect for our kids.  There was enough of a challenge that they felt like they were achieving something, it had interesting overlooks of the lake, and it was often safe enough for them to explore on their own.  How cool is it to see them get to explore!?  Max was disappointed that he couldn't go swimming and we did have to make a stop at the map so he could check it out, but he held up pretty well.

Both kids are tired but couldn't get them to take a nap on this ride to Deadwood.  Pretty happy that we did Mt. Rushmore yesterday; it's one of those things that you should see but you don't want it to monopolize your time.  Our schedule today is looking pretty good; we left Custer at 1:30 (that actually matched up with the itinerary, even though we didn't try) so we should be to Deadwood before 3:00.  Looking forward to settling in to camp, getting the kids to the pool, doing some laundry, then off to town for dinner.  Plan on hitting some casinos tonight so wish us luck.

Some other notes from today:  Sophie calls cattle gates cow bridges so that provides a small chuckle each time.  Also, Mike was able to find a new hat while shopping at Sylvan Lake so he found probably his best souvenir for the trip.

We'll be in Deadwood soon and hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures tonight.

Day 3: Animal Safari?

Our tentative plan for today (things will probably change after we get some info from the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center here at Custer State Park):

Peter Norbeck VC
Wildlife Loop Road
Little Devil's Tower (?)
Deadwood

In Deadwood we plan to have dinner at the hotel where Wild Bill was shot and our campground has a pool.  Sophie has been very excited to keep practicing to swim without her floaties.  I also think we'll have WiFi so you may actually get to see some of these posts!  Not sure if we can take the RV on any part of the Needles Highway to get to the Little Devil's Tower trailhead.

OK, so I should probably get out of the tent now and start helping!
